## Content change transition

A state can have a transition that occurs if the content changes when it is in that state.

There are two content change transitions

### Updated transition

If an **updated** transition has been added to a state, then editing and publishing an update to the content causes a transition event. The added destination state is unique to each state where the **updated** transition is present.

> ℹ️ Adding or removing a label or attachment does not action an **updated** transition.

In the published (**final**) **Approved** state in the basic Approval workflow, if the content is edited and saved, the page moves to the draft state **Review**

This transition is not implemented through the workflow popup. The workflow automatically transitions when the content is **updated**.

There is also an updated transition in the **Rejected** state in the Basic Approval workflow.

Pages in the **Rejected** state can also be approved, and the page transitions to the **Approved** state.

### Expiry transition

Another content change transition that is used in some of the workflow states is the expiry transition.

In the Content Expiry workflow, the **Approved** state has an expiry period set on the transition into the state.

When this expiry date is reached, the workflow will transition to a new state.

Again, this content transition is not implemented by a user through the workflow popup.

The workflow automatically transitions when the content has **expired**.

The added destination state is unique to the state where the **expired** transition is present.

> ℹ️ The due date period is reset every time the workflow transitions into the state and in some workflow states the expiry date can be edited by a user in the workflow popup.

Both an expired and an updated transition can be together in the same state.

- for example, the **Approved** state in the [Content Expiry workflow](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CDCCL/pages/629608558) has both of these transitions

A content change transition may also be used together in a state with an existing [content review transition](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CDCCL/pages/631406935).

Content review transitions are in several states in the installed [Comala Document Management workflows](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CDCCL/pages/631177568).
