## Overview

In the app space settings, you can configure how reviewers are assigned and the users who can be assigned as reviewers using the workflow builder visual editor.

> ℹ️ Both preassigned and manually assigned reviewers do NOT need **edit** permission to make approval decisions or to assign or unassign reviewers. Only **view** permission is required.

## Preassigned reviewers

One or more users or members of a user group can be automatically preassigned as reviewers when the workflow transitions into a state that includes an approval.

The following video gives a quick demo of how you can preassign reviewers in the workflow builder. 

 

> ℹ️ Reviewer assignment settings for an approval can be configured only by a space administrator while editing the workflow. These settings are applied when the workflow transitions to the approval state. Additionally, a space administrator can manually initialize the workflow if required.

### Users can be assigned through UI

**Users can be assigned through the UI**  in the workflow builder for approval. The approval remains assignable. The specified users are preassigned as reviewers, and they have the ability to assign or unassign other reviewers as needed.

**Who can approve or reject**

- One or more users can be assigned as reviewers** **(using the workflow dialog on the page).
- Only an assigned user(s) can approve.
- Until a reviewer is assigned, any Confluence user (*with ****view**** and**** edit**** permission for the page) *can approve or reject to complete the approval.

User avatars for preassigned reviewers are displayed in the workflow state dialog box on the page.

### Automatically assign users or groups

Automatically assigning reviewers ensures that only specific individuals or teams are assigned to review content, thereby reducing the likelihood of oversight or missed approvals.

At least one username or group name must be entered into the workflow builder approval editor using the *automatically assign users or groups*** **dropdown menus. The workflow preassigns users as reviewers when transitioning to the workflow state containing the approval.
