Use **Refine Ticket** to clarify a work item before resolving it. Appfire QueueZero reviews the ticket, connected code, and documentation to identify missing information, ask targeted questions, and propose an improved description and acceptance criteria.

Approved changes are added to the ticket without changing the original text. You can close the refinement process at any time without updating or resolving the work item.

## Before you start

Before refining a work item:

- **Connect your personal Atlassian account.** Go to **Account settings**, find **Personal Atlassian**, and select **Connect my Atlassian**. QueueZero uses your personal connection so that updates to the Jira ticket are attributed to you.
- **Make sure your Atlassian account has access to the Jira site containing the work item.** If your connected account cannot access the site, ask a Jira administrator for access, then reconnect your Atlassian account.
- **Select at least one repository.** QueueZero uses the selected repositories to read the relevant code and generate refinement questions.

These requirements apply when refining a work item from either the QueueZero standalone app or the QueueZero panel in Jira.

## Refine a work item

1. Open the work item in the QueueZero standalone app or the QueueZero panel in Jira.
2. Open the **More** menu and click **Refine Ticket**.
3. If there is only one repository connected, the refinement process will start after a small delay. If more than one repository is connected, either choose the appropriate one, or if one is already selected click **Adjust** to add or change repositories. Click **Continue** if the process does not start automatically.

> 📝 If your personal Atlassian account is not connected, **Continue** is unavailable. Click **Go to profile** to connect your account. When you return, the dialog updates automatically and keeps the repository and branch selections you already made.
> 📝
> 📝 If your connected Atlassian account does not have access to the Jira site containing the work item, ask a Jira administrator for access, then reconnect your account.

6. Select **Generate improved specification**. QueueZero uses your answers to refine the description and acceptance criteria.
7. Review the proposed refinement:
  - Review the assumptions QueueZero used when generating the refinement. Each assumption indicates how it was established, such as from code, environment verification, or information provided in the ticket.
  - Review the ticket type identified by QueueZero, such as **Bug**, **Feature**, **Improvement**, or **Security**. If the classification is incorrect, use **Not right?** to change it.
  - Check the updated description and acceptance criteria. Select **Edit** to change either section.

> ℹ️ **Review what QueueZero verified**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ When environment verification is available, QueueZero can show a **What QueueZero verified** section containing facts it confirmed or ruled out by running commands against the repository environment.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ Expand **Evidence** for an item to review the command and its output.

7. Choose where to add the refinement:

  - **Append to the ticket description**
  - **Add as a comment**

8. Choose how to continue:

  - **Save and go to resolve** — Saves the refinement to the ticket and opens the resolution dialog. This does not start the resolution process!
  - **Save and exit** — Saves the refinement and closes the flow so you can resolve the work item later.

QueueZero adds the refinement to the work item in a marked refinement block. The original description remains unchanged.
