You can update OKRs automatically or manually.

As your teams work toward their Objectives, you can track their progress in multiple ways. Then, depending on the OKR's health, you can decide to update its status or close it.

## OKR progress

The process for updating the progress of Strategic themes, Objectives, and Key Results is as follows.

- Strategic theme progress is determined by the progress of all its direct sub-items (sub-strategic themes, Objectives, and Key Results) and their respective weights.
  - If the Strategic theme is in automatic progress mode, its progress updates automatically as the sub-items' progress changes.
  - If the Strategic theme is in manual progress mode, the user updates its progress manually.
- The top-level Objective progress is determined by the progress of all its direct sub-items (sub-objectives) and their respective weights.
  - If the Objective is in automatic progress mode, its progress updates automatically as sub-items' progress changes.
  - If the Objective is in manual progress mode, the user updates its progress manually.
- The progress of the Key Result is determined by the progress of all its linked work items:
  - If the Key Result is in automatic progress mode, its progress updates as its linked work items move to **Done** status. If the KR is linked to a box, its progress updates when the tasks in that box move to **Done** status.
  - If the Key Result is in manual progress mode, the user updates its progress manually.

## OKR statuses

### OKR update statuses

The OKR status reflects an OKR's success at a given point in time. There are four statuses you can assign when you update the OKR status:

- Not started
- On track
- At risk
- Off track

Statuses cannot be customized and must be updated manually—even if your OKR shows negative progress or reaches 100% success, its status will not update automatically.

### OKR closure statuses

When you close an OKR, you can assign it a status to better reflect the reason for its closure. There are five closure statuses:

- Success
- Incomplete
- Failed
- Rescheduled
- Cancelled

## Track OKR status

The progress and status of your OKRs can be tracked only in the OKR module on the:

- *[Overview](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SPM/pages/1918834317)* page (**Progress** column)
- *[Hierarchy](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SPM/pages/1918669889)* page
- *[Progress Dashboard](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SPM/pages/1918801225)* page
- *[OKR Details](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SPM/pages/1918536390)* page

You can also visualize the [OKRs in the Gantt module](https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SPM/pages/1918835163)’s column view using the **Objective** and **Key** **Results** columns. In addition, you can:

- Track individual work items that contribute to the completion of the associated KR.
- View and track all the tasks under specific KRs or all the tasks and KRs that belong to a given Objective.
- Display all OKRs and their associated tasks as a group on the Gantt timeline.
- Track work items assigned to KRs with a specific OKR type (**OKR Type** column).
