This article documents a resolved support case where a customer was confused about how to assign projects to boxes in BigPicture Enterprise when using the Classic project type in Box configuration.

**Outcome:** The issue was resolved by explaining that project assignment is done at the individual box level (via Scope definition), not at the box type configuration level.

# Issue summary

A customer evaluating BigPicture Enterprise (Data Center, v8.70.1, Jira 10.3) noticed that when adding a Classic project type in Box configuration, there was no way to specify which Jira project would be mapped to the box. They had three questions about this behavior.

# Symptoms observed

- No project selection available when choosing the Classic project type in box configuration.
- Customer expected the project mapping to be part of the box type configuration.
- Customer was unsure how to add a project data source to a box.

# Root cause

This was a misunderstanding of the BigPicture architecture. The project (data source) assignment is not part of the box type configuration — it is configured at the individual box level after creating the box. The box type defines the template and default settings (available modules, scheduling mode, etc.), while the actual Jira project mapping is done per box via the Scope definition.

# Resolution

The following was explained to the customer:

**Q1: Why no project selection in box type configuration?**
The box type defines the template and default settings. The actual Jira project mapping is done per box via the Scope definition. A Jira Project field is available during box creation.

**Q2: How to add a project source?**
Navigate to: **Box configuration → Tasks → Scope definition** (or Work items from Jira). Add data sources — Jira projects, boards, or saved JQL filters.

**Q3: Is the project type list configurable?**
Yes, with BigPicture Enterprise, users have unlimited configuration of box types and can create custom box types via: **App Settings → Administration → Box types**.

# How to troubleshoot similar cases

1. **Clarify the distinction** between box type (template) and box instance (specific project mapping).
2. **Guide to Scope definition** — Box configuration → Tasks → Scope definition.
3. **Note the creation modal** — Jira Project field is available during box creation.
4. **Check edition** — Enterprise allows custom box types; Standard has limited built-in types.
