This article explains how to create a dynamic "Current Release" saved view in JXL Sheets that automatically updates when a release ships. This approach covers two distinct use cases: using the built-in **Fix version status** smart field for simple release cycles and using a **Custom Formula** for complex environments with multiple future releases.

## Use case 1: dynamic filtering via Fix version status

### Problem or context

Customers often need a "Current Release" view that automatically rolls over to the next version once the current one is marked as "Released" in Jira. Manually updating static `Fix Version` filters across multiple sheets (for example, 10+ team sheets) is time-consuming and prone to error.

### Cause

JXL Saved Views typically store static column filter states. If you filter by a specific version name (for example, "v1.0"), the view will not automatically switch to "v2.0" when "v1.0" is released.

### Solution or workaround

Instead of filtering by a specific version name, use the JXL **Fix version status** smart field. This field dynamically tracks whether a version is `Unreleased`, `Released`, or `Archived`.

1. **Set the base JQL:** Configure your sheet’s JQL to include all relevant work (for example, `project = "PROJ" ORDER BY Rank ASC`).
2. **Add the smart field:** Click **Add column** and search for **Fix version status**.
3. **Configure version selection:** If issues have multiple fix versions, open the column configuration and select which version to evaluate (for example, **First version** or **Last version**).
4. **Apply filter:** Filter the **Fix version status** column to `Unreleased`.
5. **Save view:** Click **Views** > **Save current view as...** and name it "Current Release".

**Result:** When a version is released in Jira, work items associated with it will automatically drop out of this view, and items in the next unreleased version will remain visible or newly appear.

## Use case 2: advanced filtering for multiple future releases

### Problem or context

In environments where multiple future releases (for example, Release 9, 10, 11) are planned and assigned simultaneously, the `Unreleased` filter may show too much data. The customer needs to isolate only the "Current" release based on a specific timeframe or cadence.

### Solution or workaround

Use a **Custom Formula** column to calculate the "Current" release based on the release date and your team’s cadence.

1. **Add a Custom Formula column:** Add a new Formula column in JXL.
2. **Apply the script:** Use the following JavaScript formula to identify the current release based on a defined cycle (for example, 28 days).

### Related code

```
const CYCLE = 28; // Your release cadence in days
const now = Date.now();
const versions = this.fixVersions ?? [];
for (const v of versions) {
    if (v.released || v.archived) continue;
    const rd = v.releaseDate;
    if (!rd) continue;
    const daysOut = (new Date(rd).getTime() - now) / 86400000;
    // Returns "Current" if the release is within the cycle or overdue
    if (daysOut <= CYCLE) return "Current";
}
return versions.length ? "Future" : "";
```

3. **Filter and save:** Filter this new column for the value `Current` and save it as your "Current Release" view. This ensures that even if future releases are planned, only the one closest to its release date is displayed.
